George T Stagg 2020 (130.4 Proof)

George T. Stagg is a highly sought after bourbon release from Buffalo Trace Distillery. This high proof release is very difficult to find and obtain at reasonable prices. For many years it has been renowned for the ultimate in rich flavor, robust and complicated aromas and exceptional finish. To date, the 2014 release of G.T. Stagg at a whopping 144.1 proof is the most memorable and flavorful bourbon I have been blessed with experiencing. It is still the bottle of bourbon that all others should aspire to imitate in my opinion. With that said, I was very unimpressed last week when I finally obtained a pour of the 2020 release at 130.4 proof.

There are so many other bourbons that can easily be obtained over the Stagg release which completely dominate this giant today. If you were a fan of George T. Stagg in the past, I would definitely encourage you to look at the Stagg Jr. line which as the little brother continues to outperform it's aged counterpart significantly in the last 2 years for flavor, nose and finish.

Other considerations recommended over the George T. Stagg 2020 release: "Elijah Craig Barrel Proof"; "Wild Turkey Rare Breed"; "Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve" and "Bulleit Barrel Strength" bourbons.

Color: Medium / Dark

Fair Bottle Value: $75 (Secondary prices push towards $700+ and are completely irrational, when blinded this bottle will continue to be beat out by sub $55 bourbons)

Nose: peppermint, clove, smoke, tobacco, vanilla, marshmallow, cherry
Palate: vanilla, caramel, cherry, oak, pecan
Finish: medium : oak, almond, butterscotch, peppermint

Rating: 3.5/5

Recommend: If obtained at the $99 MSRP possibly. This drinks like a $60 bourbon with confused, unbalanced notes inside.  Those expecting to find an elaborate display of the younger brother Stagg Jr. inside this bottle will be sadly disappointed.
