Bourbon Tasting Notes / Review



Notes:
This is a 90 proof straight bourbon, aged for a minimum of 10 years, that can be difficult to find for many. It has been winning awards for many years for good reasons. The Buffalo Trace distillery does an exceptional job keeping the flavor profile consistent year after year. Single barrel store picks are available, however it each run is technically a small batch product.

Fair Bottle Value: $45

Nose: heavy grape aromas from the neck pour, carmel, toffee and slight marshmallow
Palate: nice rich flavors of a grape jolly rancher or grape jelly, faint oak, leather & vanilla
Finish: smooth medium finish where the grape dissapates into a nice oily, oak & carmel

Cons: bottle neck pour experience is somewhat different if the bottle has been opened for several months. After 3 months the grape nose and flavor became surprisingly thin, more of the leather and toffee characteristics became prominent.  This may not be a surprise to many bourbon enthusiasts as most bourbons do change as the alcohol interacts longer with the air and environment after opening.  The bourbon became smoother, easier on the palate.

These are all solid and good bourbons from the batches I have enjoyed.  This batch in particular seems to branch off from the normal Knob Creek profile and becomes a very enjoyable bourbon with peanut butter and molasses flavors that are buttery rich.  It rounds out nicely with other flavors on the palate. My bottle was opened for a few months prior to this review. Palate and finish are nice, but not overly complex. There is a nice aged aroma and flavor that you would expect from a 12 Yr product. It smells like a barrelhouse with old aged distillates.
